Why public health needs a burst of light

Scientific writing, it seems, bears no light. It neither disrupts nor challenges darkness. It often curtails imagination and creativity. It denigrates writing that expose, move

  • “My submission addresses healing in mental health through the experience of someone who has lived through it. All too often in interactions with health professionals, particularly in the realm of mental health, there is a disconnect from those outside and inside the mental illness. With my writing, I want to try to bring the reader into the present moment of the feeling and experience of living with, in this case depression, to increase empathy and understanding. Even with awareness campaigns, there remains a lot of confusion about what depression actually is. Then, hopefully, with a deepened understanding of the lived experience, friends, family, and doctors will know what actually helps, and what aren’t helpful suggestions.”

  • a thanksgiving message from all of us at LIGHT✨

dear friend in light,

may this holiday bring you much repose and tranquility, gratitude and recognition, comfort and tradition, love and light. we offer this poem of gratitude, hope and light, for what has been and what will be...

When Giving Is All We Have by Alberto Rios, 1952
We give because someone gave to us.
We give because nobody gave to us.
We give because giving has changed us.
We give because giving could have changed us.
We have been better for it,
We have been wounded by it—
Giving has many faces: It is loud and quiet,
Big, though small, diamond in wood-nails.
Its story is old, the plot worn and the pages too,
But we read this book, anyway, over and again:
Giving is, first and every time, hand to hand,
Mine to yours, yours to mine.
You gave me blue and I gave you yellow.
Together we are simple green. You gave me
What you did not have, and I gave you
What I had to give—together, we made
Something greater from the difference.
